What I Ordered vs. What I Got: Why Quality Still Matters

I love to shop. That probably doesn’t surprise anyone. 😂

And owning a boutique has definitely not cured me of it.

I shop everywhere. I love finding new styles, trying different brands, seeing what’s trending, and yes… sometimes ordering something because the picture online is just too cute to pass up.

You know the feeling.

You’re scrolling. You see the top. You think, Ohhhh, that’s cute.
Then you see the price and think, Well, now I basically have to buy it.

Into the cart it goes. 😂

Recently, I ordered a few shirts from SHEIN that were advertised as cotton. When they arrived, let’s just say there was a little bit of a “Wait… is this the same shirt?” moment.

They didn’t really look like the pictures I ordered from. The fabric felt way rougher than I expected, and I couldn’t find a fabric-content label on the pieces to confirm exactly what they were made from.

And after staring at them for a minute like they had personally betrayed me, I walked away with two reminders:

There really is a difference in quality.

And…

A picture can only tell you so much.

Online shopping makes it incredibly easy to fall in love with a picture. Especially in the age of AI.

And I say that as someone who uses AI myself. It’s an amazing tool, but it can also make just about anything look amazing online.

I have no idea whether AI was used in the photos of the shirts I ordered, but looking at the picture versus what showed up at my door definitely made me wonder.

And that’s really the point. Whether it’s AI, editing, lighting, styling, or just a really good photograph, the image still needs to represent what you’re actually buying.

Clearly, I am living proof that a good picture works. 😂

You see a cute print, a flattering style, a great price, and suddenly you’re convincing yourself that you absolutely need another top.

But a photograph can’t tell you how the fabric feels in your hands.

It can’t tell you whether it’s soft or scratchy. It can’t show you the weight of the material, how it hangs on your body, how the seams are finished, or whether the actual piece is going to look anything like the one that made you hit Add to Cart at 11:47 at night.

That’s where quality becomes noticeable.

Why I’m Picky About What I Bring Into Southern Sass

I look at a LOT of clothing for Southern Sass Boutique.

And when I say a lot, I mean there are probably people who would be concerned if they saw how many clothing tabs I can have open at one time. 😂

But I don’t choose pieces based on the picture alone.

And if I use AI to help show you how a piece can be styled or worn, I still want the clothing you see to accurately represent the clothing you're going to receive.

I pay attention to the fabric. I look at the details. I look for interesting cuts, textures, trims, washes, and prints. And more and more, I look for natural and breathable fibers like cotton, linen, and Tencel, along with quality viscose and rayon.

I also keep going back to brands like Easel, POL, Umgee, and the European designers I’ve discovered because I’ve seen and felt the difference in their clothing.

Is it always going to be the cheapest option?

No.

But that’s not what I’m trying to offer.

I want to offer clothing that feels good when you take it out of the package.

Pieces with details that make them special.

Clothes you’re excited to wear,  and still want to wear long after the first picture.

Clothes that get noticed.

Clothes that make you stand a little taller or walk out the door feeling just a little more confident.

I’m Still Going to Shop Everywhere

There are things I’ve ordered from inexpensive retailers that I’ve liked, and I’m sure there will be more.  I know myself too well to pretend otherwise.

But this particular order reminded me why I’m willing to pay more for better brands when I’m buying for Southern Sass,  and why I’m so particular about what I choose for the boutique.

Because:

Cheap and good value are not always the same thing.

Sometimes you get a bargain.

Sometimes you open the package and immediately understand why it was $11. 😂

I’d rather find something at a fair price that looks good, feels good, wears well, and makes you happy you bought it.

That’s the kind of value I’m looking for when I shop for Southern Sass.

The Difference Is in What You Get

I’m going to show you the pictures from this order, what I ordered vs. what actually arrived, because sometimes the pictures say it better than I ever could.

And honestly, they’re a little funny once you get past the disappointment. 😂

It’s also why you’ll continue seeing me talk about fabric content, construction, fit, and where pieces are made on the Southern Sass website.

Those details matter to me.

Because when you open a Southern Sass package, I don’t want your reaction to be:

“Well… that looked better online.”

I want it to be:

“Oh, I LOVE this.”

That’s the reaction I’m shopping for when I choose pieces for you.
