Why I Fell in Love with Italian Fashion - And Why My Customers Are Too

It started with the fabrics. Then came the prints. But what really won me over was what happened when women actually wore it.

If you’ve been following Southern Sass, you’ve probably noticed something: I’ve fallen a little bit in love with Italian fashion.

Okay… maybe more than a little.

But it wasn’t because “Made in Italy” sounded fancy or because I decided I needed a European collection on the website.

It happened because I started finding clothes that checked the boxes I’m always looking for when I buy for Southern Sass: beautiful fabrics, interesting details, flattering silhouettes, comfort - and most importantly, pieces that don’t look like everything else.

And that last part matters to me.

I’ve Never Wanted to Sell What Everyone Else Is Selling

I’m a hunter.

I genuinely love the challenge of finding something different - whether that means tracking down an unusual print, finding a better fabric, discovering a small brand, or searching until I find something I haven't seen in every other boutique.

If you send me a picture and say, “Can you find something like this?” you have probably just made my day.

Challenge accepted.

That same instinct is what led me deeper into Italian fashion.

The more I searched, the more I found pieces that made me stop scrolling.

Flowing linen. Soft Tencel. Cotton. Beautiful viscose. Unexpected prints. Gorgeous colors. Relaxed silhouettes that still looked put together.

Clothes that felt special without feeling fussy.

And clothes that I could actually imagine women wearing in real life.

The Clothes Just Get Noticed

Here’s something else I started noticing.

Every time I wear one of my Italian pieces, somebody says something about it.

I get compliments. People ask where I got it. They notice the fabric, the print or the way the piece falls.

And that matters because the entire idea behind Southern Sass has become:

Wear Something Worth Noticing.

I don't mean that everything has to be loud, flashy or over-the-top.

Sometimes the thing that gets noticed is an incredible print.

Sometimes it's an unusual silhouette.

Sometimes it's a simple linen top that just looks different.

It's that little something that makes another woman stop and say:

“I love that. Where did you get it?”

And then one of my customers gave me the absolute BEST example.

The Airport Story

One of my customers purchased two Italian blouses from me and took one with her on a business trip.

On the last day of the trip, which was also the day she was traveling home, she wore one of her new blouses.

As soon as she got home, she texted me to tell me what had happened.

She had gotten so many compliments on her blouse throughout the day.

But then she told me the part that made my day:

One woman actually chased her down the airport terminal to find out where she got her blouse.

I LOVED IT.

Because that is exactly what I want to find for my customers.

Not just another shirt.

Not something that looks like twelve other things already hanging in your closet.

Something that makes you feel good when you put it on - and makes other people notice, too.

She literally wore something worth noticing.

And I can't think of a better compliment for Southern Sass than that.

But There Was One Problem: Plus Sizes

As excited as I was about the Italian pieces I was finding, there was something that frustrated me.

Finding Italian fashion in more inclusive sizing was HARD.

A lot of European clothing is sold as One Size, and depending on the designer and cut, “One Size” can mean very different things.

And I wasn't interested in building a beautiful Italian collection that a large portion of my customers couldn't wear.

So I kept hunting.

I searched different suppliers. I studied measurements. I compared cuts. I looked specifically for oversized and relaxed silhouettes. I hunted for Italian pieces that would genuinely fit beyond traditional regular sizing.

And I found them.

Not every Italian piece I carry will fit every woman, and I will always tell you that.

But I've been able to find beautiful Italian styles that work for Regular AND Plus sizes, including some One Size styles with generous cuts that can fit into 1X and 2X depending on the garment, and some that will even fit up to 4X.

That's why you'll see actual measurements and fit guidance on Southern Sass whenever I have them.

Because the size printed on a tag doesn’t matter when it comes to Italian fashion.   What matters is if the garment will actually fit you.

And Then I Fell in Love With the Fabrics

The fabrics deserve their own mention because they're a huge part of what drew me in.

Linen.
Cotton.
Tencel.
Silk blends.
Soft, flowing viscose.

After wearing more natural and breathable fabrics myself, I've become much more aware of how clothing feels, not just how it photographs on a model.

There is something wonderful about putting on an outfit that looks amazing but doesn't make you spend the rest of the day wishing you could take it off.

That's the sweet spot I'm looking for:

Interesting enough to get noticed. Comfortable enough to actually live in.

Luxury-Inspired Doesn't Have to Mean Luxury-Priced

Another thing I love about some of the Italian collections I've found is that they have the look and feel of pieces I've seen at much higher-end retailers.

Beautiful watercolor prints. Dramatic florals. Equestrian prints. Linen sets. Flowing dresses. Gorgeous oversized blouses.

I want Southern Sass to have pieces that feel special without making you feel guilty for buying them.

Will an Italian linen piece cost more than a mass-produced polyester top? Sometimes, yes.

But when I look at the fabric, construction, versatility and how different the piece is from what I'm seeing everywhere else, I want you to feel the difference.

This Is What I Want Southern Sass to Become Known For

I'm not interested in having the biggest boutique on the internet.

I don't need 10,000 versions of the same shirt.

I'd rather become the place you check when you want something different.

The place where you find the blouse that gets chased through an airport.

The dress everyone asks about.

The linen set you wear over and over.

The crazy print you weren't sure about until you put it on,  and then wondered why you almost passed it up.

And I'm going to keep hunting for those pieces.
